About Dr Richard Teh-Fu Tan

Dr. Richard Teh-Fu Tan was a brilliant innovator and beloved teacher whose work transformed the field of acupuncture. Born in Taiwan into a family deeply rooted in Chinese medicine, Dr. Tan began his journey with acupuncture at just 7 years old. His early exposure laid the foundation for a lifetime of mastery and discovery.

As a young man, Dr. Tan practiced at a Taiwanese army hospital, treating hundreds of patients. Working alongside Western medicine providers, he refined a unique approach—one that would later become known globally as Balance Method Acupuncture.

In 1977, Dr. Tan moved to the United States to pursue advanced studies in engineering. His scientific training sharpened his analytical mind, ultimately deepening his understanding of acupuncture. While living in San Diego, he earned a doctoral degree in Chinese Medicine and in 1989, opened his own acupuncture practice. His success was immediate and profound. Not long after, he left engineering behind to dedicate himself fully to medicine and serve more patients.

Creator of the Balance Method

Driven by a relentless pursuit of clinical excellence, Dr. Tan developed the Balance Method Acupuncture—a system of treatment known for its logical structure, immediate effectiveness, and deep roots in classical Chinese medicine. With each patient he treated, Dr. Tan observed, tested, and refined his techniques, continuously evolving the Balance Method into a powerful and teachable clinical system.

“You are a circuit board—the dots (points) are the switches—we program your computer system by using the circuit board and command your body to self-adjust and self-heal.”  —Dr. Richard Tan

But Dr. Tan was more than just a master acupuncturist—he was a passionate educator with a deep desire to share his knowledge. He taught across the United States, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Central and South America, and Oceania. Thousands of practitioners benefited from his teachings, inspired not only by his expertise but also by his charisma, humor, and profound life wisdom. He had a way of making complex ideas simple and memorable, often with a well-timed joke or story that left students both laughing and enlightened.
